“Payment initiation places a regulated connection between a customer journey and the account that will fund a transfer. The customer remains in control of authorisation.”
From checkout to the account provider
A payment initiation service provider, often called a PISP, can initiate a payment order at the customer’s request from an accessible payment account. The customer is directed through the account provider’s authentication and confirms the instruction. The PISP does not need to hold the customer’s payment funds to provide the initiation service.
For a merchant or platform, this can create an account-to-account payment option inside an online journey. It is different from a card transaction and from manually copying beneficiary details into a banking portal. It should be presented with a clear amount, beneficiary and payment purpose before approval.
The customer experience needs honest status language
Initiated does not always mean finally settled. The interface should distinguish successful authorisation, submission, acceptance and final confirmation where the underlying systems provide those states. Merchants should decide when to release goods or recognise revenue based on the status they can reliably evidence.
For direct euro transfers outside an embedded journey, businesses can also use Zolvat’s SEPA payment services. For international needs, review cross-border payment options rather than treating payment initiation as a universal route.
Implementation questions for a business
Check the provider’s authorisation or registration, supported institutions and markets, fallback experience, refund process and reconciliation data. Privacy notices and customer support should identify the parties involved. Internal fraud and fulfilment controls still apply even when authentication is handled by the account provider.
Connecting the journey safely
Payment initiation depends on APIs, authentication hand-offs and reliable event handling. Modular Fintech’s fintech API integration page provides a useful platform-level view for teams planning the connection.
